On Both Sides the trio Matzeit|Jahnel|Sieverts succeeds in bringing the variety of their compositions and arrangements into perfect balance all around the one instrument, that functions as anchor of this ensemble, by cleverly changing from instrument to instrument (soprano saxophone/melodica resp. cello/double bass): the piano of Benedikt Jahnel. The extraordinary sound of the trio's music with its clear structure gives space for a dynamic, vivid interactive improvisation never going astray from its goal: the pursuit of a common, lively, unformatted musical identity.
