The art of very quiet sounds
The Duo KontraSax and the duo FiTa presented their very own ways to play.
The Loft, in Cologne, provides musicians
with a professional recording studio
and
a concert space that is flexible enough to
cover the span of experiments,
spontaneous
meetings, and full concert performances.
For this concert,
two duos performed and
each of them demonstrated in one set each
its own
musical personality. The Cologne
duo KontraSax is a female, long-lived ensemble
and as such is something special in the jazz
scene. Christina Fuchs (soprano
saxophone
and bass clarinet) and Romy Herzberg (double
bass) like to improvise
over material that
has been defined ahead of time. They prefer
very quiet,
slightly coloured sounds, like
a breeze, a caress, or tapping. They told,
for
example, a musical story about “the
art of travelling,” especially with
a bulky
double bass. Or they practised the
connection between concentration and
calmness,
inspired by Japanese culture.
